Kim Kardashian never fails to stun on the steps of the Met, and her look at the Met Gala 2024 Monday evening in New York was no exception.
When the reality star and shapewear mogul stepped out in a look by Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano featuring an intricate corset made of reworked vintage silver brocade that tightly constrained her waist, alongside a skirt with so many details of tooled silver, crystals, pearls, and mirror fragments that it could qualify as a piece of jewelry itself, some were surprised to see her posing with a pilled grey cardigan, repeatedly wrapping it around her shoulders and drawing attention to it.
While the desire to be cozy is relatable, Kardashian explained to Vogue on the event’s green carpet that the sweater was part of the storyline behind her look.
Though details like the romantic mostly-undone braid gently woven into Kardashian’s long blonde hair and the floral and thorn imagery worked into her overskirt nodded to the Sleeping Beauty fairytale and the Costume Institute exhibit’s title of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” Kardashian’s look was meant to lean more toward sleeplessness.
She wanted to look like she spent “the wildest night of my life in a garden,” she told Vogue, but then on her way out the door snagged her “boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on and had to get to work and my hair’s all messed up.”

The cardigan, according to Maison Margiela, even furthered the narrative, as it was made from boiled cashmere that was then “thistle-washed,” adding to the image of her dashing out the door and through the brambles on her way from an eventful night to whatever the awaited her the next day.
