She may not look like she’s auditioning for Oklahoma anymore, but things are about to get even weirder for Cassie on Euphoria.
In a new interview with Empire magazine, actress Sydney Sweeney opened up about season 3 of the HBO hit, which she is currently filming. It’s her first time playing the character in 3 years.
“I have such a spot in my heart for Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear,” she said. “She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She’s flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love.”
Sweeney added, “It could be a sad version of love, as well. It’s so much fun to play a character that is as crazy as she is. [Creator] Sam [Levinson] is such a brilliant filmmaker to work with, because I’ll read something, then I’ll call him, and I’m like, ‘Let’s go crazier.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m all in.’ And this season is unhinged.”
When the reporter asked in response, “More unhinged?”, Sweeney replied with a laugh, “Yes.”
So far, Cassie has been pressured into an abortion, has had an affair with her supposed best friend’s abusive boyfriend, and has provided fodder for countless memes with her Oklahoma bathroom breakdown. When season 3 returns, the show will introduce a time jump and pick up its storytelling after its core characters have graduated high school.
Euphoria premiered its first season back in 2019, and the teen drama launched much of its young cast to stardom, including Sweeney, who was only 21 years old when the series debuted. In the years since, Sweeney has become one of the most bankable actresses in Hollywood, starring in rom-com Anyone But You, producing and starring in horror flick Immaculate, and gearing up to portray Hollywood legend Kim Novak in a biopic.
But still, many of her fans can’t separate her from her Euphoria character. “It definitely changed my life,” Sweeney said. “I think that with the amount of access, with social media, and how much content gets put out there of Cassie… People do have a hard time separating actors from their characters, and especially someone like Cassie, where she is hated and she’s loved, but she’s definitely a complicated character. And so I think that that could confuse people, for sure. But if they’re hating me for decisions that my character is making, then I’m playing the character correctly.”
Sweeney will next be seen in Echo Valley, which hits Apple TV+ on June 13.
