It seems that Miley Cyrus and her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, are letting bygones be bygones after posing together in a recent photo, leading us to believe that the Cyrus family’s long-rumored divide is healing.
The Cyrus patriarch and country singer shared a selfie on Friday, May 9, with his two children, Miley Cyrus and Braison Cyrus in honor of the latter’s 31st birthday. In the selfie, Billy Ray posed outside with Braison, along with Miley and her boyfriend Maxx Morando — all clad in sunglasses. Billy Ray captioned the photo, “Happy Birthday Braison!!!!! 🎉♥️😃.”
The comments were flooded with fans who were excited to see Miley with her dad again after it was rumored that the six children were divided after Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus divorced in 2022.
Along with Billy Ray sharing the photo with Miley, fans subsequently noticed that Tish had unfollowed Miley on Instagram, but the mom of five said she had “no idea how that happened but it’s fixed now!” Miley backed up her mom on Saturday, writing on Instagram that the unfollowing was because Tish “doesn’t know how to work her phone.”
Of her father, Miley wrote: “My dad and I have had our challenges over the years. Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else. I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing.”
Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus married in 1993 and had three children together: Miley, 32, Braison, 31, and Noah Cyrus, 25. Billy Ray adopted Tish’s eldest two children, Brandi, 37, and Trace, 36, from her previous marriage, while Billy Ray also has a son, Christopher Cody, 33, with his ex Kristen Luckey.
After the couple divorced in 2022, it appeared from the outside that the children’s allegiance had been divided between both parents. Speculation grew even more when only three of the six kids — Miley, Brandi, and Trace — attended Tish’s marriage to actor Dominic Purcell in 2023. Miley even walked her mom down the aisle, aw! Noah and Braison were not at her wedding and were the only kids to attend Billy Ray’s 2023 nuptials to singer Firerose. (They have since divorced.)
It’s not clear why there had been a rift between the family, but Miley somewhat spoke about the complicated relationship with her dad during a wide-ranging interview with David Letterman on his Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. Letterman tried to broach the subject of her alleged estrangement from Billy Ray, but Miley danced around it, saying, “I think what is so beautiful is that my parents … they served their children. My parents served us and sacrificed so much for us. Anything we dreamed of, they made possible.”
She also said that while Billy Ray gave her a “map” of “what to do and what not to do” in her career, adding, “I also inherited the narcissism from my father.” When Miley Cyrus won her very first Grammy in 2023 for Record of the Year, she only thanked her mom and sister Brandi (and godmother Dolly Parton) in her acceptance speech and on Instagram — leaving her dad out of both.
In other feud rumors, multiple outlets reported that Noah and Tish were not speaking following Tish’s relationship with Dominic Purcell, with whom Noah had some sort of alleged romantic relationship, according to PEOPLE. Neither has directly addressed that rumor, though Noah did clap back at a commenter under one of her Instagram posts in a, uh, pointed way.
Despite the speculation, Noah and Tish squashed that all last month when Noah co-hosted Tish’s podcast, Sorry We’re Cyrus — replacing co-host Brandi for an episode. During the recording, the two seemed very happy in each other’s presence and revealed that Noah had recently moved closer to her mom.
“Noah moved this year,” Tish said, before Noah added, “very close to her.”
“That’s been so good for us. Being able to go on our walks and we found our new favorite ice cream truck,” Noah said of Tish.
The two then gushed over Noah’s fiancée, German fashion designer Pinkus, saying that “my fiancé and my mom are really close.”
It’s unclear where all the kids stand with one another, but Noah did wish Braison a happy birthday on her Instagram Stories on Friday, sharing a photo of her big brother with the caption, “Happy birthday bubby!!!!! I love you so much.”
In January, following Billy Ray Cyrus’s performance at President Donald Trump’s inauguration, Trace Cyrus shared an emotional open letter to his dad on Instagram, along with a photo, saying that he “barely” recognizes “the man that I wanted so desperately to be.”
“Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away,” Trace continued. “Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better.”
It’s unclear where Noah stands with Billy Ray, but she did share her support of her father’s new song in February, posting on Instagram “so proud of my Dads INCREDIBLE new single LOST with my good, old friend @samtinnesz and @tommeeprofitt.”
For now, the Cyrus family drama seems to be ever-changing.
