Former Modern Family child star Aubrey Anderson-Emmons has come out as bisexual with a sweet nod to her sitcom roots.
The 18-year-old actress-singer shared the announcement Monday to Instagram, in a video that used audio from a Modern Family scene where her character, Lily Tucker-Pritchett — the adopted daughter of gay couple Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) — insisting “No I’m not, I’m gay,” in response to Gloria (Sofia Vergara) telling her that she’s Vietnamese.
“People keep joking so much abt [sic] me being gay when I literally am (I’m bi),” Anderson-Emmons wrote in text that appears over the footage of herself lip-syncing the sitcom’s lines.
In the video’s caption, Anderson-Emmons added, “happy pride month to all and to all a goodnight hehehe” and used the hashtag #bi, among several others.
Social media star Trisha Paytas offered support in the comments section, writing “Queen!” under the video shortly after it was posted.
Anderson-Emmons landed her breakout role in Modern Family beginning with season 3, and she portrayed the character of Lily until the show’s final edition, season 11, in 2020. At age 4, she took over for Ella and Jaden Hiller, who previously played Lily as a baby.
Since the show ended, Anderson-Emmons has updated her followers with regular life developments online, including in a 2024 post she shared ahead of attending her high school prom.
In a “Get Ready With Me” TikTok post last year, Anderson-Emmons, who hasn’t appeared in an acting role since Modern Family ended, also reflected on taking on the part at such a young age.
“I think people don’t realize, I was working, and if I wasn’t working on the set, that I had to do three hours of studio school a day, so I had no time to rest except lunch,” she said at the time. “And there are moments that were fun, for sure. And there were things I loved about it.”
Despite her break from acting since 2020, Anderson-Emmons has released music as a budding pop star under the name Frances Anderson.
