Key Points

  • Austin Butler is sharing the real reason why he looked so shy while dancing on stage at his Caught Stealing costar Bad Bunny’s Puerto Rico concert.

  • The Elvis actor revealed on The Tonight Show that he had taken an edible before the show and wasn’t aware that he’d later end up on stage.

  • “So I’m like, ‘Hide.’ Like, my body’s saying hide,” he said.

Austin Butler is setting the record straight on that shy little shimmy he was doing at Bad Bunny’s Puerto Rico residency earlier this month.

While visiting The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, the 33-year-old Elvis star explained that he’d taken an edible prior to attending his Caught Stealing costar’s recent concert and had no idea that the place he was standing was actually a secondary stage.

“I thought we were just going to be in an audience with everybody,” Butler confessed to Jimmy Fallon. “Somebody gave me an edible right before the show and I thought that was a good idea at the time. So I ate the edible, and then it turns out we’re in a casita, a house, that is basically the second stage… [Bad Bunny’s] on that stage at one point.”

The sudden spotlight, combined with the fact that he was very high, created a bit of a nightmare situation for the Golden Globe winner. “I’m in an ironic job because I don’t really like — I don’t even like people singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me,” he explained. “And so suddenly I’m on stage with Bad Bunny…”

“And you just took an edible,” Fallon added, to which Butler quipped, “And the edible is working. It was wild.”

The Oscar nominee explained that was conflicted on how to properly handle the lively situation unfolding around him.

“One is like… I’m just like, ‘I’m so proud of [Bad Bunny].’ And I’m like watching him going, ‘Oh my God. Look how much you mean to everyone here.’ And I’m falling in love with Puerto Rican culture and the dancing and everybody’s so sexy and amazing,” he recalled. “And then the other part is of me is like, ‘Don’t dance, because you’ll take attention away from him. This is his moment.’”

So, rather than taking one direct course of action, he decided that the best thing to do was a bit of both and to just hope for the best. “So I’m like, ‘Hide.’ Like, my body’s saying hide. But then the music’s so good and it’s in my bones at that point and I’m wanting to dance,” he said. “But then the other voice inside is saying, ‘Don’t take attention away.’ So I ended up just like swaying my hips while crossing my arms.”

Fallon then cut to a clip of Butler’s mini swaying moment, which went viral shortly after the concert.

“For whatever reason, every time I uncrossed my arms, I felt like I was drawing attention to myself. So I was like, ‘This is okay,’” Butler admitted, making a show of crossing his arms. He let them fall to his sides before adding, “This is not okay.”

But it was hard because he also very aware that didn’t want to look like a total stick in the mud at Bad Bunny’s concert either.

“And then I think of like the Ben Affleck thing at the Grammys where people said he wasn’t having a good time and so you’re like, ‘I don’t want to be the sad guy,’” he said, referring to Affleck’s sullen expression at the 2023 Grammys that became an instant meme. “But you also don’t want to be the guy who’s dancing crazy and drawing attention.”

Butler then asked Fallon if he’d ever found himself in a similar situation. “I went to a Harry Styles concert and felt so old,” the host confessed. “I was there and I didn’t know what to do and I just stood there and folded my arms… I looked like a dad or something.”

Watch Fallon and Butler talk about his dance skills in the clip above.
