NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman is livid because her grown children didn’t make an effort to meet their cousins’ new baby

  • The woman detailed the situation on a community forum, where she asked others if she was being “unreasonable” to be so upset

  • The post sparked debate among post commenters, with some people empathizing with the woman and others completely disagreeing with her perspective

A woman says she is “absolutely raging” over the fact that her grown children were “so bloody rude” to their cousin, and she’s now wondering if she overreacted.

The woman detailed her story on the “Am I Being Unreasonable?” forum on the U.K.-based community site Mumsnet.com, a place where women can go to seek advice about interpersonal dilemmas. In her post, the woman said that she has five children — two sons, ages 25 and 22, and three daughters, ages 24, 19 and 17.

The woman went on to say that all five of her children were recently staying at her house for the weekend, and that her niece stopped by to say hello and to introduce her five-day-old newborn baby.

“My youngest three [children] came downstairs and chatted, held [the] baby, etc., but my eldest two didn’t,” the original poster (OP) said, adding that her eldest daughter is going through a breakup and claimed “she was too tired” and “doesn’t really like holding babies.” Meanwhile, her eldest son said “he just doesn’t get the hype, but apologized.”

The OP added that her niece was there for three hours, so there was “plenty of time” for her two eldest children to “pop in.”

“AIBU [am I being unreasonable] to be absolutely raging that they were so bloody rude?” the woman asked at the end of her post.

The woman’s post garnered mixed responses among her fellow Mumsnet users. Some commenters said that they completely understood why she was so outraged.

“You had guests for three hours,  and they stayed in their rooms the whole time?!” one person said. “Unacceptable. If they want to do that, then grand, [but] do it in their own house.”

“Regardless of meeting the baby, it’s incredibly rude to hide away in a bedroom when there are guests downstairs. They should have popped in to say hello and left if they weren’t interested in your niece or the baby,” added someone else.

Other commenters, however, said they didn’t think the OP should be micromaaging her grown children’s decision.

“It was a bit rude, and I would tell them, but I don’t think I would be ‘raging’ about it,” one person said, adding, “They are adults, and their relationship with their cousins is theirs to navigate.”

“It’s up to adults to facilitate relationships with other adults. Not sure why this would even be on your radar, to be honest,” said someone else.
