Donald Trump posted on Saturday that he is giving “serious consideration” to revoking Rosie O’Donnell’s citizenship.

The president posted on Truth Social, “Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship. She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

The president cannot revoke the citizenship of someone born in the U.S., something that legal scholars have long noted. The 14th Amendment to the Constitution says, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.”

O’Donnell, who was born in New York, is a longtime Trump nemesis. She moved her family to Ireland earlier this year, saying in a TikTok video that “when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”

O’Donnell has continued to be critical of Trump on TikTok and other social media, posting earlier this week that Trump “has put this country in danger” with his “horrible decisions.” She said that the cuts to the National Weather Service to the deaths in the flash floods in Texas. “These are the results that we are going to see on a daily basis,” she said.

After Trump’s Truth Social post, O’Donnell wrote on TikTok, “the potus ladies n gentlemen is a disgrace to all our beautiful country stands for – he is a danger to the nation – a mentally ill untreated criminal who lied to america for a decade on the apprentice – thanks mark burnett – and u fell for it – its so tragic – had u grown up in Ny – as i did and he did – u too would know what a total fool he is – add me to the list of people who oppose him at every turn – its now or never america 🇺🇸 – my little posts from dublin upset him – go arrest a few brown people u truly evil man child.”

Trump has sought to end the practice of “birthright” citizenship via executive order. That has been challenged in the courts, and this past week a judge blocked Trump’s effort.

Despite signing an executive order earlier this year to ensure that the federal government would not engage in “any conduct that would unconstitutionally abridge the free speech of any American citizen,” Trump has sought to sanction dissenting voices. Among other things, he recently threatened to prosecute CNN for reporting on an app that tracks sightings of ICE agents, and earlier this year barred AP reporters and photographers from the Oval Office and other White House venues because their Stylebook did not recognize the president’s change of the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

In May, Trump called for a “major investigation” of Bruce Springsteen, alleging that Kamala Harris paid for his endorsement during her 2024 campaign. Her campaign has denied that claim. Springsteen has been critical of Trump while on a European tour, calling the president’s administration “corrupt, incompetent and treasonous.”
