NEED TO KNOW

  • Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are celebrating Trooping the Colour

  • Kate Middleton and Prince William’s children have all attended the military parade since they were babies

  • The moment marks the Prince and Princess of Wales’ children’s second major appearance of the year so far

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are making their royal return to Trooping the Colour.

On June 14, Kate Middleton and Prince William‘s three children stepped out to attend Trooping the Colour in London. Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, have all attended the military parade, which recognizes the monarch’s official birthday each year, since they were toddlers.

The royal siblings wore outfits that coordinated perfectly with their parents. Princess Charlotte matched mom Princess Kate in an aqua dress, while Prince George and Prince Louis sported suits with red ties, coordinating with dad Prince William’s military uniform.

Charlotte also wore a special touch — the same brooch gifted by her late great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, which she previously wore to the monarch’s funeral in September 2022.

After arriving by car at Buckingham Palace, the trio rode in a horse-drawn carriage with Princess Kate down The Mall in London. Princess Charlotte sat next to their mother, while Prince George and Prince Louis rode side-by-side, facing backward.

The children’s longtime nanny, Maria Borallo, was also seen on the parade ground in her signature tan uniform.

In recent years, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have participated in the parade in two major ways. Since 2022, the children have traveled by carriage down The Mall to watch the pageantry at Horse Guards Parade. They also have appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the grand finale — the flypast performed by the Royal Air Force — since they were young.

Last year, Prince Louis stole the show by dancing, yawning and playing with curtain cords while watching the actual trooping of the “colour” (or regimental presentation of flags) from the Major General’s Office overlooking Horse Guards Parade.

Another breakout moment was when Princess Charlotte snapped into big sister mode and told her little brother Louis how to stand on the palace balcony as the national anthem played.

Trooping the Colour marks Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis’ second major royal event of the year. The children joined their parents in a surprise public appearance on May 5, attending the parade and flypast that kickstarted the U.K.’s commemorations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The event fell two weeks after Easter, when William and Kate skipped the royal family’s traditional Easter church outing to instead mark the holiday privately in Norfolk, where they have a country home.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are known to strike a careful balance around raising their children in the royal spotlight while prioritizing their privacy and family time. George, Charlotte and Louis only attend a handful of public events each year, and William and Kate clear their work calendars when their children are off from school.

Speaking to Hello! magazine in 2024, royal biographer Ingrid Seward said, “Like many famous parents, they are cautious about exposing the children to too much scrutiny in this digital age. They know they must produce the children at certain times, but I think they very much keep them under wraps the rest of the time.”

Offering comment on George, Charlotte and Louis’ sibling bond, Seward said, “The three of them seem to get on incredibly well. They’re close in age, they all enjoy sports, they’re bound by the situation they’re in and they’re all in it together. And I think that makes them all closer.”
