  • Miley Cyrus previewed her upcoming Something Beautiful visual album at an event with Spotify at Metrograph in New York City on May 6

  • During a Q&A, the “End of the World” musician opened up about losing her Malibu house in a 2018 fire

  • Cyrus explained why she now views the loss as the “biggest blessing”

Miley Cyrus is able to find something beautiful in the dark moments.

After an intimate preview screening of her upcoming visual album Something Beautiful presented by Spotify at Metrograph in New York City on May 6, the Grammy-winning superstar, 32, spoke about her Malibu home burning down in 2018 — and why she looks back on the loss with positivity.

The topic arose as Cyrus was asked by longtime fan Matt Peterson about advice she’d give her younger self based on where she’s at now in life. “When my house burned down, that was the biggest blessing I’ve ever had in my life, actually,” the “Flowers” singer said of the home she shared with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

“Losing everything and being able to rebuild, and to be able to be purposeful and choose every piece that I’m gonna collect or also just about the people in my life,” continued Cyrus. “And I guess for me, when my house burned down, a lot of my relationships also burned down, and that again just led me to such magic and to have so much gratitude.”

The house shared by Cyrus and Hemsworth burned down in November 2018 amid a series of devastating California fires. They got married the following month and later separated in August 2019.

“I think what I would have told my younger self is to appreciate those darker times because, like I said, they are only leading you into the light,” she said at the screening.

Cyrus noted that she’s “excited for my younger self to really experience” the Something Beautiful era and hopes her own love for the project is apparent to fans. “This album has to start with me loving it,” she said, “and then the love that I have for it, whether you know it or not, it’s gonna be coming through the speakers when you’re listening.”

Elsewhere during the Q&A, the “End of the World” musician opened up about the special connection she shares with her fans, many of whom have supported her since she was on Hannah Montana.

“People say we grew up together, and we really did,” said Cyrus. “And it’s definitely what makes, I think, this film so magical and so potent is that all of us have kind of created it together, and it’s cool to be in a room full of people I’ve never met, you know, or strangers, and, you know, you’re not that strange.”

“We’re all a little strange, but that’s what I think has made all of us really, kind of hold on to the relationship that we have,” continued the performer. “It’s cool to be able to go into a room with people I haven’t met and be like, ‘Remember when my house burned down?’ And you guys are like, ‘Yeah.’ ‘Remember when my fish died?’ ‘Yeah.'”

“It’s like, all these things that were really little, most people don’t care. They don’t have millions of people that are like, ‘Sorry about your fish,’ but it’s so nice that I have millions of people that are like, “Damn, Pablow, you know, like, R.I.P.,'” added Cyrus, referencing the late pet that inspired her 2015 song “Pablow the Blowfish” from Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz.

Something Beautiful is set for a May 30 release, and the accompanying film premieres at Tribeca Festival in N.Y.C. on June 6.
