A pesky buzzkill for beachgoers was shown swarming the shores of South Florida in a drone video taken this week.
Aerial footage captured on Wednesday, April 23 shows masses of seaweed lining the shore of Miami Beach, a famous destination and beach getaway for travelers.
Some took to social media to post videos and comment on the “seaweed invasion” in Miami Beach.
Forecasts initially showed it could be a busy year for seaweed in the Atlantic Ocean, researchers at the University of South Florida said in early 2025. Researchers in a December report they found “relatively high amounts of Sargassum in the tropical Atlantic” that could eventually make its way to the Caribbean and Florida coastlines.
Sargassum provides food and habitat for marine wildlife, but too much of it could exacerbate respiratory issues (and leave an unpleasant stench) as it decomposes on the beach, health officials have said.

The drone video, taken by Tony of @tonedrone, shows some beach patrons still trying to enjoy the day as gobs of seaweed float nearby.
