Shae Watson, left, and Kat Randolph had come from their home in Brooklyn to see an exhibition about the choreographer Alvin Ailey at the Whitney Museum when I saw them on Little West 12th Street in Manhattan’s meatpacking district on a Sunday afternoon in January. I was captivated by the layered outfits they had assembled, which had distinct sensibilities and showcased their eye for detail.
Ms. Watson’s ensemble included terrazzo-print pants and a ribbed cardigan she had bought secondhand in Tokyo. Finishing it off were cowboy boots, which she called her version of sneakers. “I wear them everywhere,” Ms. Watson, 38, said. Her dark green overcoat went nicely with the pale green utility jacket that Ms. Randolph, 31, was wearing with striped overalls — a nod to the rapper and musician André 3000, who often wears them, Ms. Randolph said.
Ms. Randolph added that her outfit had been built around a “winter color scheme” of blues, blacks and greens. Dressing according to that palette is “something that’s been connecting me to my fashion lately,” she said.
