Indonesian textile imprint Sejauh Mata Memandang (SMM) has partnered with contemporary artist Eko Nugroho to create an investigative fashion exhibition modeled after their DEWI Fashion Knights runway collaboration at Jakarta Fashion Week, titled Republik Sebelah Mata.
Open now through April 30 at The Space, Plaza Indonesia, the gallery will include 25 fashion designs that were previously presented during SMM’s runway show. Creative directed by the collection’s co-designer Felix Tjahyadi, the exhibition opens with a special patterned carpet made with organic materials, including palm kernel shells, which leads into a pop-up store selling both SMM products and DGTMB merch from Nugroho.
The main exhibition, meanwhile, sees mannequins dressed in the collaborative line against a backdrop composed of Nugrohio’s curated paintings. Notably, the “Ruang Malam” room houses three all-black outfits, which were crafted in response to “injustice, sorrow, disappointment and resistance.”
“After the fashion show at DFK 2024, Eko, Felix, and I discussed how a wider audience could enjoy this collection. We wanted to create a space where people could not only see the designs but also understand the stories behind each piece, the creative process, and the artisans and partners who contributed to it,” said Chitra Subyakto, founder and creative director of Sejauh Mata Memandang.
Nugroho added, “Through this collaboration, I want to invite more people to see art in various forms. Fashion is a medium that is close to our daily lives, and I want to show that art can live on our bodies.”
See the exhibition’s featured looks in the gallery above, and explore the show for yourself at The Space, Plaza Indonesia, through the end of April.
