Nestled in the mountainous terrain of Ottsjö, Sweden, just south of Åre Ski Resort, Note Design Studio has completed its first full-scale architectural project — a home designed for a nature-loving couple.
Since its founding in 2008, Note Design Studio has embraced a multidisciplinary approach and this project marks its evolution into architecture. This project represents a shift “where we establish the architectural framework rather than adapting to pre-existing conditions,” says co-founder Johannes Karlström.
Blending seamlessly with its surroundings, the house maintains a distinct and modern identity. The design comprises three identical pitched-roof volumes, subtly interlinked and offset to maximize panoramic mountain views to the west. This configuration allows the house to follow the natural contours of the land, creating a fluid and intuitive layout.
Each volume is designated for different functions, ensuring a seamless balance between communal and private spaces. A central footbridge enhances connectivity, allowing for easy interaction while maintaining spatial efficiency. The result is a highly social yet functional living environment.
Materiality plays a key role in both aesthetics and performance. The façade, clad in untreated Norrland heartwood with varying panel widths, introduces subtle textural depth, while locally sourced Norwegian marble complements the pine, reinforcing a connection to the region. Built for harsh mountain conditions, the steep roof is designed to withstand heavy snowfall while capturing daylight and framing breathtaking views.
Designed to embrace the realities of mountain living, the structure features a steeply pitched roof capable of handling heavy snowfall, while its orientation maximizes natural daylight and panoramic views. The house stands as a testament to Note Design Studio’s ability to merge material integrity, spatial intelligence and functional resilience within an architectural form.
