Paradox Interactive announced its intention to acquire all shares in Haemimont Games, which will bring the Bulgarian studio under the Swedish company’s umbrella as a subsidiary.
Both parties have experience working with each other, as Paradox has published Haemimont’s city-builder Surviving Mars in 2018. Other notable games by the studio include the tactical RPG Jagged Alliance 3 and several entries into the Tropico franchise. It also produced several RTS and city-builder hybrids in the early 2000s that found some popularity with genre fans, such as 2004’s Nemesis of the Roman Empire.
Paradox called the acquisition “a further step in Paradox’s strategic focus on growing in the management games genre, by building a strong internal capability that complements the Group’s current studio organization” in its official statement. Haemimont’s ongoing projects will continue on as planned after the transaction is completed and its leadership will remain intact as well, so Paradox is not looking to make any radical changes upon taking over.
“We are very happy to welcome Haemimont Games to Paradox,” commented Fredrik Wester, the CEO of Paradox. “They bring a tight-knit team with long experience in developing management games with many well received projects in their portfolio. Moreover, they have a strong creative streak, technology developed for their niche, a new IP in development and a strong culture that fits Paradox’s way of working. We have strong faith in their team and leadership, and our main focus now is to ensure that they can continue to create great games under new ownership.”
“We’re delighted to become a part of the Paradox family,” added Haemimont founder Gabriel Dobrev. “The cultural fit between our companies is remarkable, and we already feel at home. This partnership empowers us to push the boundaries of our games, delivering deeper and more intense experiences to our players. It also opens new horizons for our team, technology, and creative processes, which we’re eager to explore. Expect amazing new games from us!”
Bulgaria is becoming a bit of a hub for large European strategy game developers: Total War dev Creative Assembly also maintains a studio in the country.
Paradox and Haemimont have not disclosed the purchasing price, but stated that the transaction “is financed with cash at hand and expected to be completed within a few days.”
