EXCLUSIVE: Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus, The White Lotus), Caroline Aaron (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, 21 Jump Street), Noam Ash (The Other Two), and Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll, The Acolyte) are set for 5x Media‘s Bookends from filmmaker Mike Doyle.
The movie, off a screenplay by Ash, follows Nate (Ash), an excitable millennial novelist, who is forced to leave his fabulous city life behind and move in with his grandparents after a bad breakup. But when his Holocaust-surviving grandfather, Saul (Abraham), shows signs of cognitive decline and his grandmother, Miriam (Aaron), refuses to acknowledge her husband’s early signs of dementia, Nate finds himself torn between his desire to escape retirement community life, family responsibilities, and an unexpected romance with his grandparents’ doctor (Barnett).
The movie is based on Ash’s own experience living with his grandparents, and was developed in conjunction with the Maimonides Fund.

“Bookends is a coming-of-age story deftly blended with complex end-of-life issues. It has a rare combination of humor and heart that cuts across generational lines in a deeply profound way,” said producers and 5X partners Scott Einbinder (Killer Joe, Hitman’s Bodyguard) and Alon Shtruzman (Tatami, La Brea, Echo 3). “We are thrilled for it to be 5X’s debut feature film.”
Henry Russell Bergstein, Warren Ostergard, and Ash produce alongside Einbinder and Shtruzman.
“The film celebrates the beautiful messiness of life, the resilience of the human spirit, and the unbreakable bonds that tie us to those we love across generations,” adds Doyle. “A story that will make us laugh, cry, and cherish the wonderful, unpredictable journey of family and love.”
Abraham is repped by Innovative Artists, Aaron by Innovative Artists and Vanguard Management Group, Ash by Buchwald, Barnett by Gersh and Artists First, and Doyle by Gersh.
