One person was killed and at least four were injured after a tornado touched down in Brazoria County, in southeastern Texas, on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.
The tornado touched down multiple times in the early afternoon, said Madison Polston, a spokeswoman for the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, in an area outside of a municipality that is about 30 miles south of Houston. There were reports of at least 10 buildings, including a school and residences, that were struck by powerful winds, she added.
The injured were all in noncritical condition on Saturday evening, and were taken to a hospital in the Houston area. It was not immediately clear if any of the victims were sharing a residence.
“We rarely get tornadoes here in Brazoria County,” Ms. Polston said. “If we do, for there to be damage to this extent, or injuries, is also very uncommon.”
The damage came as the National Weather Service issued a series of tornado warnings on Saturday in areas across the South, including in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
East Montgomery County, which is north of Houston, reported heavy structural damage from a possible tornado, according to the Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. There were 11 reports of tornadoes spread across several states in the region as of Saturday evening, according to the service.
A tornado warning from the service’s office in Lake Charles, La., was in effect until late Saturday afternoon for northwestern Cameron parish, just east of Texas in southern Louisiana. It warned area residents that they faced “a life-threatening situation” in which flying debris could turn deadly.
“To repeat, a large, extremely dangerous and potentially deadly tornado is on the ground,” it said.
