Travis Kelce did not mince words when it came to his feelings on the movie Love Actually.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 35, previously called the 2003 film “torture,” but perhaps was swayed to watch it due to it being girlfriend Taylor Swift‘s favorite Christmas movie.
While speaking about the star-studded classic on the Tuesday, December 24 episode of his New Heights podcast with brother Jason Kelce, 37, Travis called it “very interesting” and said the plot was “fun.”
However, it doesn’t sound like the pop superstar’s love of the film was enough to really change her boyfriend’s mind, as he joined Jason in heavily criticizing the movie, while sister-in-law Kylie Kelce, 32, tried to defend it.
“What’s crazy is that all of these stories tie together in one community, and it’s supposed to make it look like this is what happens,” Travis said, adding. “Like, this is what’s going on around you.” He dubbed the storyline “far-fetched,” and said he “couldn’t relate to anybody on screen.”
The Grotesquerie actor was also not a fan of the “scandal” of the film and admitted it was “terrifying” to watch. Jason slammed the “family values” of the movie, complaining in particular about a scene in which one character cheats on her husband with his brother.
Travis insisted, “I didn’t feel Christmas at all during the movie,” and he and Jason both denied it could even be considered a Christmas movie.
In a clip from the episode shared to Instagram, Kylie’s jaw dropped hearing Jason and Travis’ harsh critique of the film, which stars big names like Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman, Martin Freeman, Laura Linney, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Bill Nighy, among others.
Despite their criticism, she insisted, “Love Actually is one of my favorite movies. Period.” She couldn’t help but to roll her eyes as Jason ranted on about why he doesn’t like the film, before pointing out a key reason he may not see the movie’s charm.
“I’m realizing that is the problem here. He wouldn’t know romance if it smacked him square in the face,” Kylie said of her husband. She and Jason have been married since 2018, and share daughters Wyatt, 5, Elliotte, 3, Bennett, 1, with one more on the way.
Swift has previously talked about her love of Love Actually, like in a 2014 Teen Vogue interview in which the “Fortnight” singer used a version of a quote from the film as her personal motto. In the movie, Grant’s Prime Minister character says in a voiceover, “If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.”
The “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” singer will likely have even more time to watch holiday films with her beau this year, as she recently concluded her almost two-year, record-breaking Eras Tour.
Swift was present last year as Travis and his team played the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas, so it’s likely she’ll be there to cheer him on when the Chiefs play the Pittsburgh Steelers in one of two Christmas Day games set to live stream on Netflix.
