Heretic is releasing on premium-video-on-demand this week, just in time for Hugh Grant to haunt your holidays. Why watch him as a charming politician in Love, Actually, when you can watch him as a deranged killer in Heretic?
Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the filmmaking duo behind 65 and the script for the first Quiet Place movie, Heretic stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as two young missionaries who go knocking on the wrong door. Hugh Grant’s character, Mr. Reed, may look like a kindly old man in a sweater, with a blueberry pie in the oven. But looks can be deceiving. These two young women will find themselves in the most dangerous situation of their lives—and will be forced to question their faith.
Also starring Topher Grace and Elle Young, Heretic was mostly well-liked by critics, and managed to earn over $39.6 million at the worldwide box office. Now the movie has a chance to make even more money on PVOD. But before you spend your money to watch Heretic at home, you should know that we expect to see Heretic streaming free on Max.
Where to watch the Heretic movie on streaming:
Beginning on Tuesday, December 10 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday, December 9) you will be able to buy a digital copy of Heretic on platforms like Amazon Prime, Vudu, Apple TV, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to buy the film, but on Amazon, the film cost $24.99 to pre-order a digital copy. Heretic will not yet be available to rent online.
Heretic is not currently available to stream on any subscription-based services, but the film will eventually be coming to streaming, on Max, thanks to the recent 2023 deal between A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery, which brings A24’s previous and upcoming theatrical releases to the streaming service Max.
When will Heretic be streaming on Max?
The Heretic streaming release date on Max has not yet been announced, but we can make an educated guess as to when you can expect to see Heretic on Max.
The A24 deal is a “Pay-1 deal,” which means A24 movies will start streaming on Max in the “Pay 1 window,” meaning that Max will be the first “TV channel” to pay for the rights to Heretic, after the film has been released on digital and home media. One recent A24 title, MaXXXine, began streaming on Max about three-and-a-half months after its release in theaters, and about two-and-a-half months after its release on digital. If Heretic follows a similar release strategy, you’ll see Heretic streaming on Max around late February or early March 2025. That said, perhaps the movie will come to streaming sooner, to capitalize on awards season.
This is all speculation. If you want to watch Heretic right away, you can buy or rent a digital copy starting tomorrow.
