Not only did the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series this season, but they’re set up to be a dominant dynasty for years to come.
Thanks to Shohei Ohtani’s $680 million of deferred money attached to his contract, Los Angeles can freely afford to add superstar talent alongside Ohtani and the rest of the team.
This allows them to make free agency signings like they did with outfielder Teoscar Hernandez. It also allows them to make trades for expensive pitchers like they did with Jack Flaherty.
On Friday afternoon, the Dodgers had their championship parade through the city of Los Angeles. Through all the excitement, cheering and a tad bit of intoxication, a few players stood out with their comments during interviews.
One of them was starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, who’s set to enter free agency now that the season’s over. Flaherty has been connected to teams like the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. But Flaherty himself threw another team into the mix.
Flaherty made 10 regular season starts and five postseason starts with the Dodgers after being acquired at the trade deadline. He dominated the New York Yankees lineup in Game 1 of the World Series, though he didn’t earn a win.
It’s tough to know how serious Flaherty is with these statements. During the celebration of a World Series championship, it’s understandable to want to remain with the team you helped win a title. But when the contracts are put on the table, money talks.
